Charlie (my 10 year old) and I had so much fun making and decorating this cake together. We even cackled like witches when we were done! Ha! Charlie has been making cakes with me for about a year. We started as a way to take her mind off of up coming surgeries and yucky stuff she was facing at the time. Her aunt suggested it as a way to help Charlie and I cope with the hard time we were having waiting for test results and healing after surgery. It has ended up being a fun journey for us as a mother and daughter. I think this is our 13th cake. How fitting for Halloween!!
We wanted it to be BRIGHT, colorful, and just a little bit spooky. I think we achieved our goal quite nicely!
We almost always use Betty Crocker cake mixes and frostings… we haven’t jumping into making cakes from scratch just yet.
Here are a few other things we use when making cakes.
–Wilton 6-Inch Round Cake Boards
–Wilton Icing Colors, 12-Count Gel-Based Food Color
–Wilton 46-Piece Deluxe Cake Decorating Set, Cake Decorating Supplies
We obviously love Wilton products and NO this is not sponsored by Wilton… that’d be cool. But, I was not given free product or paid for this post. Haha! I wish!!
This has been an investment in my relationship with my daughter that I am happy to buy supplies for. It has been fun to see her creativity and ideas blossom as we have made more and more cakes.
The ONLY thing you can’t eat on this cake is the fake spider. That is from the Dollar Store
The bark on top of the cake is white chocolate with food coloring mixed in. After is was melted we poured it onto parchment paper on a cookie sheet. We smoothed out the chocolate, added sprinkles to it, and then set it in the freezer to harden. After it was hard we broke it up into triangle shapes with out hands and placed it on the cake. The spider webs on the cake is also white chocolate that we melted in the microwave (20 seconds at a time, stirring in between until melted). We used a small baby spoon to gently fling it onto the sides of the cake.
Man I love Halloween! If you have anymore questions about how we made this cake please comment below! And feel free to PIN these pictures on Pinterest!!
